Supervisor, 7th Episcopal District
Supervisor Phyllis N. Green has been described as a woman of God who makes others feel visible and empowered to use their God-given gifts for Kingdom building. Moreover, she is inspirational, dynamic, and a relational visionary who is dedicated to the work of serving all of mankind. Recently, she was elected as the President of the Supervisors Council of the African Methodist Episcopal Church.
Supervisor Green has served alongside her brother-in law, the Right Reverend Samuel Lawrence, Green, Sr., since 2009 while he was the Presiding Prelate in the 12th Episcopal District (Oklahoma and Arkansas).
Signature projects during her tenure in the 12th Episcopal District included adoption of Simone’s Home in Little Rock, Arkansas. Simone’s home was a community-based program for girls 12-18 years old who were in long term foster care family-style environment. The facility ran like any other household—the six residents attended public school, participated in sports and extracurricular activities. Some of the girls even held down part-time jobs. In addition, an annual Christmas party was held for the residents and the staff. During the 2010 Connectional YPD Leadership Training institute, two dozen young people from across the AME Church volunteered to redecorate the recreation room and also planted fresh flowers along the front porch area. One of the Episcopal YPD officers completed undergraduate degree requirements by interning at Simone’s Home.
Since 2016, Supervisor Green continued her work in South Carolina, when Bishop Sam was assigned to the Seventh Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. She has taken her work with the Women’s Missionary Society, the Young People’s and Children’s Division, the Christian Debutantes and Masters Commission, and the Ministers’ Spouses, Widows, Widowers Plus P.K.s Organization (MSWAWO) to another level. Signature projects include partnerships with Student Support Services at Allen University in Columbia, SC. The WMS and YPD annually donate $150,000 in support of educational programming. In addition, a clothes closet on campus affords the students access to business attire for job/career fairs and for other educational pursuits.
In addition, the various ministries within the Seventh Episcopal District answer the clarion call to help others at home and abroad by partnering with social service agencies and other Episcopal Districts.
Supervisor Green, a native Floridian, was educated in the public school system of Pinellas County. She furthered her education at Bethune-Cookman College (University) in Daytona Beach, Florida where she obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. She later earned a Master’s Degree at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) in Counseling Education.
Aside from her work in the church, Supervisor Green is a Golden Life Member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, has served as a tutor for elementary school-aged children and is a former member of the Tallahassee Chapter of Jack and Jill of American, Incorporated. In addition to her social, civic and church-related responsibilities, Supervisor Green loves “tweaking” recipes when cooking for her family.
Supervisor Green and her husband are the proud parents of one daughter.
Among Supervisor Green’s many goals, two that are near and dear to her, are publishing a devotional guide for clergy spouses and creating avenues by which all people will come to understand their responsibility for sharing with others the gifts and graces given to them by God.
