In July of 2004, Wilma Delores Webb Williams was appointed as the Episcopal Supervisor of the Seventh Episcopal District which encompasses the entire state of South Carolina. Honoring the mission of the A.M.E. Church, Dr. Williams and the Seventh District’s Women’s Missionary Society annually visit correctional facilities, senior citizen service organizations, health care providers and schools, seeking to make a difference in the lives of those most in need. During each Annual Conference, the WMS ventures out into the local community and meets with local agencies such as food pantries, domestic violence shelters, health clinics, hospices, detention centers, clothing centers and homeless shelters to assess the needs of those agencies. By the end of each Annual conference, the Seventh District provides financial contributions to those local agencies to help remedy their needs.
Dr. Williams’ passion for youth education has touched and inspired numerous youth and outreach ministries and local agencies throughout the Seventh District. Under Dr. Williams’ supervision, a DMC Curriculum Guide was created to help standardize the DMC process statewide. Dr. Williams has also established partnerships with various government and community agencies, including the Eyes On The Child Program which matches A.M.E. volunteers with at-risk elementary school children in need of additional educational and developmental support. In May of 2006, Allen University in Columbia, S.C. awarded Mother Williams the honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree. In essence, Dr. Williams leads a life that teaches, encourages and equips the saints for ministry and salvation, and continues to be an instrumental figure in the development of new initiatives designed to empower the lives of the citizens of South Carolina.
Dr. Williams was affectionately crowned “Mother Williams” in Zimbabwe 2000 when she and Bishop Preston Warren Williams II were appointed to govern the 17th District of the A.M.E. Church which comprised the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Zaire), the Congo Brazzaville, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Burundi, Tanzania, Rwanda and Malawi. While in Africa, Mother Williams assisted in the significant increase of the 17th District’s Women’s Missionary Society (WMS) and the Young People’s Division. Under her supervision, the WMS implemented many new programs designed to address the various needs of the indigenous peoples of Central Africa, including the planting of vegetable gardens, the establishment of feeding centers for malnourished children in Mwezeni, Kwacha, and Kamitondo, and the formation of workshops addressing issues related to HIV/AIDS, child abuse, and fundamental human rights. Dr. Williams has thirty-five years of experience as a teacher of English and Language Arts and was a tenured educator in both Georgia and Alabama.
Dr. Williams has also served as a Music, French, and Head Start Teacher as well as a curriculum developer in the Atlanta Public School System for grades K-12. Dr. Williams has been an active member of the Atlanta Federation of Teachers, the Atlanta Education Association and the Educational Leadership Council. She has served as a Georgia Language Arts Supervisor and is a member of the National Council of Teachers of English, Phi Delta Kappa and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
Dr. Williams received a Bachelor of Science degree from Alabama A&M University in Normal, Alabama, a Master of Arts Degree from Clark-Atlanta University in Atlanta, Georgia, and has earned her Ed.S degree from Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama.
Dr. Wilma Delores Webb Williams is a native of Leeds, Alabama. She was born the eldest of nine children to Richard Pecan and Janice Mitchell Webb. She is married to Bishop Preston Warren Williams II, the 119th Bishop in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, and they are the immensely proud parents of four children: Arnold Andre, a physicist; twin daughters Wilma Priscilla, a chemist, and Stella Jacinta, a geologist; and Prestina Delores, a Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. Department of State.
